DIY DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

If you're seeking to lead a more tranquil and easy lifestyle in Geelong, then drip-feed irrigation systems are the answer. Also known as drip-line irrigation, this quick and easy system makes sure that your garden is always looking luscious and vibrant without having to spend hours with a hose - plus it helps reduce water bills!

Drip feed irrigation is the most efficient way to provide your plants with even, low-level hydration exactly where they need it. To make sure that your system constantly runs as needed and without any interruptions, you should use a timer connected to the outdoor tap. You could also operate it manually; however, don't forget that if left running for too long this means an increase in water bills - not to mention potential flooding of your beloved plants!

To ensure that your drip feed irrigation system stays in perfect condition, it is best to place them around the edges of your garden or any low-traffic areas. Furthermore, make sure you install these systems somewhere where they will not be disturbed while doing regular gardening tasks. You may also use this watering system for hanging and garden pots but take into consideration how plastic piping can affect the overall aesthetic of these ornamental features.

To begin your irrigation project, you will require the following supplies:

  • - Pressure Valve: Connected to the main water supply, the pressure control valve ensures that you have a steady flow of consistent pressure throughout your entire plumbing system.
  •
  • - Automatic Timer: Opting for an automatic timer to regulate when and how long you water your garden is the most efficient way of keeping your plants healthy while away. That being said, if manual control fits better with your lifestyle, don't forget it as a viable option!
  •
  • - Main Supply Pipe or Hose: To ensure optimal water pressure, it is essential to equip your garden with a semi-rigid hose of 13mm diameter coupled with the correct connectors and fittings.- Supply pipe or tube – a narrow gauge (4-6mm diameter) flexible pipe that connects off the main supply pipe to individual parts of the garden or pots.
  •
  • - Drip Heads: It's possible to place individual drippers intermittently along the supply pipe, or attempt a single one at the conclusion of every line. You can adjust how many water drippers dispense, but usually, they are made for administering 2-4 litres per hour.
  •
  • - Dripper Stakes – To avoid blockage and ensure that your dripper heads remain above ground, dipper stakes or garden wire can be employed. This will guarantee the optimal functioning of the system.

For installation:

To ensure your pressure valve and timer are installed properly, you'll need to have a qualified plumber connect them to the water mains.

  • - Connect up the main supply pipe and lead out through the garden.
  •
  • - Connect up your supply pipes leading off the main pipe into individual parts of the garden and pots.
  •
  • - Position at least one dripper near the rooting area of each plant or pot. If watering a lawn, place drippers evenly about 20cm apart. Keep drippers clear of the soil by using stakes or wire.
  •
  • - Check the flow to all dripper heads by turning on the water. Experiment with timings to establish how long you need to set your timer to adequately water your garden. Start with a short period (5-10min) and build up until you’re happy. In dryer weeks you may need to increase the watering time. You can invest in an inexpensive handheld moisture meter to more accurately check how much water is needed.
  •
  • - Set the timer accordingly. As any good gardener knows, it’s normally best to water in the evening to minimise water loss by evaporation.

Keeping your drip irrigation system in peak condition is essential to maximize its benefits and ensure optimal performance. Regularly inspect the lines, check for potential clogs or leaks, and adjust spray patterns as necessary. Keep an eye on moisture levels so you can optimize water usage while still providing enough hydration to keep plants healthy - make sure that no excess runoff occurs due to over-watering! With just a few simple steps, you can enjoy all of the advantages that come with having a well-maintained drip-feed irrigation system.
