USING LARGE BOULDERS IN LANDSCAPING

Over the years, there has been a continued gardening trend toward more natural landscapes with the use of large rocks and boulders. But planning and using these materials in your garden can sometimes make you feel like you've hit a solid rock wall.

When working with rocks and boulders, it’s important to consider the overall size that would be suitable in the space. Use smaller stones and pebbles in tight spaces where you have flowers and plants. Smaller rocks are also a fantastic way to prevent weeds and keep moisture in the soil. Larger stones work well for large open areas or if you have room for adding layers to your garden space. Layering garden beds with the help of rocks can elevate your landscape and make your neighbours green with envy.

There are a few key things to remember when dealing with large boulders and rocks. Any boulders larger than 45 kilograms are required to be set deep into the ground so they can maintain their location during heavy rainfalls, high winds, and sudden Melbourne earthquakes. If you are using them to layer your garden, be sure to use smaller rocks at the higher points, leave the large decor ones to ground level

Boulders can become a safety hazard if these measures are not taken when designing the garden area. If you have an odd-shaped boulder or stone, place its most flat surface into the ground. Use items like concrete to help bury the boulder for extra support.

Boulders are one of those elements in landscaping design that will always look great and give your garden plenty of curb appeal! Not only do they create detail around planting beds and water features; but boulders and pebbles also work well as focal points in a garden because nothing contrasts better against green grasses and colourful flowers than a row of rocks or a circle of pebbles. They also make a great adventure area for young children to explore with parental supervision.
