TIPS ON GROOMING YOUR CATS

Cats often clean themselves so why should you also give them a bath?

Cats will often roll around in the dirt, sleep on dusty surfaces and even play in the mud. So giving you're cat a monthly bath is a good idea.

Before starting, however, be sure to have your cat's nails trimmed back, not only will this protect you from nasty scratches. It will also protect your bathtub or sink. It is also a good idea to invest in a rubber mat to place on porcelain surfaces so your pet feels more secure and is not ready to slip and slide all over the place.

Time for the Equipment.

Here is a list of items you'll need to give your cat a bath. Be sure to talk with a member of our team at our Pet Desk before purchasing, as your cat may require a unique shampoo for their personal needs.

  • - Cat Safe Shampoo (A Flea Shampoo is not recommended if you use other forms of flea prevention as it will give your pet a higher exposure to pesticides)
  • - Small Soft Washcloth
  • - Treats
  • - Toys
  • - Towels
  • - Pitcher or Small Plastic Cup for Rinsing. (We don't recommend hosing down cats with a showerhead, leave that to bigger dogs)
  • - Rubber Mat

Now you have everything prepared, it's time to start the grooming process.

It's important to play with your cat before you place them in a few inches of water (It should never be above the top of your cat's legs). You want to bond with them and show them that this isn't something to be scared of.

Once the cat is settled into the water, you can start by using the pitcher or cup to start running water gently across their fur.

Next, You'll want to grab some shampoo and start working it into the cat's fur, gentle circles or long strokes are ideal. Anything rough or harsh can spook them. It's important to avoid sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, mouth and nose. The best way to clean a cats face is with a small washcloth and plain water. Gently brushing it across the cats face.

This would also be a great time to offer your cat a treat, Something in liquid puree form would be ideal with a Licking Mat. It will help keep the cat distracted and calmer.

It's time to grab the pitcher or small cup again and gently rinse the shampoo from the cat's fur. You can use your hand to help remove some of the dirt with gentle pats and strokes.

Once your feline has been completed rinsed, wrap your cat in a warm towel and gently pat them dry. You can use a hairdryer on the lowest setting if your cat can handle the noise. If not then continue with towel drying.

After that is all complete, offer them a special treat or a new toy. It will help promote good behaviour for future baths if they know they will be rewarded after.
