ESSENTIAL SAFETY TIPS FOR ENJOYING YOUR BACKYARD FIRE PIT

When it's cold outside, it's a great time to snuggle up around a backyard fire. Whether you're with friends or family, there's nothing quite like gathering around a warm blaze to make memories that will last a lifetime. However, if you're not careful, those fires can quickly turn into a disaster for your brand-new lawns. That's why it's important to take some precautions and use a portable fire pit when you're enjoying your flames. By following these simple tips, you can rest assured that your next outdoor event will be safe and enjoyable for everyone!

Be sure to look up your state's regulations and laws as each state can have unique rules and laws around backyard fire pits. These laws can also change very fast so it’s important to check every time before lighting. If you are still unsure, contact your local fire brigade and they will be able to advise you further.

Here are some general simple tips to ensure your lawn is safe from your fire

1. Fire safety is the most important aspect, so make sure you have a hose or extinguisher nearby and keep your fire to a manageable size where you don’t lose control. Rake around the area of any debris and dead grass that might light if an ember manages to escape.

2. Raise your fire pit on a platform – Using bricks or pavers will create a heat shield for the grass below. Just be sure to remove them once you are done if you are using a portable fire pit. If you are inputting a terminated fire pit, be sure to build a paved area before using it. The higher the fire is the less chance it will have of scorching the grass underneath.

3. Place some sand in the bottom of the fire pit. Sand will act as an insulator and help to disperse the heat more evenly.

4. The grass underneath and surrounding your fire pit can still get quite warm from the heat of the fire, so giving it water a few times throughout the night or in advance will help to cool it down.

5. Try not to use lighter fluid or other fuels that create extremely hot flames. You want the wood to catch fire naturally and slowly, building nice hot coals at its base.

6. There are many new types of fire pits available that are raised and adaptable to smaller backyards. It’s worth shopping around to find one that’s perfect for you and your lawn area and backyard vibe.
